Australia has produced some great TV. No, seriously! And we have also produced some great TV theme songs — note that, in this context, "great" can also mean "charmingly daggy".
TVFIX couldn't include all the great theme songs in our countdown — apologies to classics like the theme tunes from Kath & Kim, A Country Practice and Ship to Shore — but we've tried to narrow it down to the top five Australian TV theme songs. Did we make the right choices?
(Warning: you will have at least one of these tunes stuck in your head forever.)
Known to fanatical Prisoner diehards as "the classic song 'On the Inside', performed by Lynne Hamilton and composed by Allan Caswell", and "that song about the roses" to everyone else, the drama's closing ballad lent what was otherwise an occasionally tacky melodrama a serious weight.
Australians didn't invent Playschool — credit for that goes to the British — but we did invent its theme song. Which is possibly the most joyful, inclusive tune ever written. There's bears! And chairs! And games! And stories! And everyone is welcome to them! We dare you to listen to that and still feel depressed.
3. Skippy the Bush Kangaroo
"Tch tch tch." "What's that, Skip?" "Tch tch tch!" "You think the theme tune to Skippy the Bush Kangaroo is a super-daggy yet timely classic, despite the awkwardness of the lyric 'Our friend ever true'? Well, gosh!"
2. Home and Away
The title of the Home and Away theme song is, boringly, 'Home and Away', and it used to be a lot longer — the number of verses has gradually been cut back over the years, probably to make way for more ads. Still, the tune captures the relaxed, melodramatic feel of living in a quiet beachside town that's the home of multiple murderers, psychotics and drama queens.
Yes, it's true that Home and Away's theme song is, objectively, better than Neighbours' theme song. But Ramsay Street's anthem is just so shamelessly daggy — the original version was sung by Barry Crocker! — that it's a more perfect embodiment of suburban Australia.
