Brothers & Sisters creator Jon Robin Baitz will adapt The Slap for the US market.

The 2011 Australian series, itself an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Christos Tsiolkas, starred Jonathan LaPaglia, Essie Davis, Melissa George and Alex Dimitriades.

It proved popular with audiences and critics alike, winning 5 AACTA Awards and the Logie for Most Outstanding Drama Series, Miniseries or Telemovie. It is currently nominated in the Drama Series category of the 2012 International Emmys.

Baitz will executive produce the adaptation alongside Tony Ayres, who produced the original version.

"We are ... excited to see how the premise of The Slap, which really is universal in its reach and effect, will translate in particular into the American context," Ayres told TV Tonight.

The Slap will air on US network NBC. There is no word yet on whether it will screen locally.
