Brad Pitt has openly criticised the US government’s “War on Drugs”. And he’s talking from experience.

"I'm Brad Pitt and I'm a drug addict," the Killing Them Softly star joked at a weekend film screening in Los Angeles.

"No, my drug days have long since passed" he said.

"It's certainly true that I could probably land in any city, in any state, and get you whatever you wanted. I could find anything you're looking for, give me 24 hours or so. And yet we still support this, I have to say, this charade called the drug war."

Pitt had drugs on his mind as he introduced a new documentary he helped produce at its Friday premiere. The House We Live In, by filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, investigates the drug epidemic in the US.

Brad has been honest about his marijuana use in the past. In a 2011 interview with Parade, the 48-year-old star said how he spent most of the ‘90s – including his marriage to Jennifer Aniston – on the sofa with a joint.

He continued saying government policy was "flawed" and an "an incredible failure" , and suggested he supports legalisation.

"The only way to end the war on drugs is to take the profit out of it,” Brad said.

“We have to look at the what-if-everything-was-legal and people were allowed to make their own choices.”
