Ricky: 'I internalised homophobia'.

Ricky Martin has made the shocking confession that he used to bully gay people before he came out publicly as gay in 2010.

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican singer spoke to Australian GQ magazine for their September/October issue, on which he appears on the cover, about his struggles with his sexuality as a young Roman Catholic man.

"I was very angry, very rebellious. I used to look at gay men and think, I'm not like that, I don't want to be like that, that's not me. I was ashamed," Ricky told GQ. "When you're told you're wrong by everyone, from society, from your faith — my self-esteem was crushed. I took my anger out on those around me."

"I look back now and realise I would bully people who I knew were gay. I internalised homophobia," he added. "To realise that was confronting to me. I wanted to get away from that."

Voice coach Ricky has been with stockbroker Carlos Gonzalez for more than five years. In 2008, Ricky fathered twins Matteo and Valentino, born from a surrogate mother.

The 'Livin' La Vida Loca' singer came out in 2010 with a heartfelt statement on his website. "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am," Ricky said in the open letter.

We're proud of you too, Ricky. We're looking forward to seeing Mr Martin back in Oz for his tour in October — click here for details.
